The Treaty Debate in the U.S.

  • In 1836, America did not fully support the addition of Texas.

  • Northern states did not want to add a slave-supportting state

  • Mexico may have declared war on America if they annexed Texas

  • In 1844, John Tyler begins negotiations with Texas again

  • On April 12 of the same year, "The Treaty of Annexation" did not have the sufficient number of votes to be ratified

  • On February 28, 1845, the resolution successfully passes through Texas and is signed by President James K. Polk on March 1

  • On October 13, Texas voters vote in favor of the annexation

  • On Deceber 29, Texas is admitted into the U.S.

As a State

  • Once Texas officially became the 28th state on December 29, 1845, Mexico decides not to follow through on its plan to declare war for the U.S. annexing Texas

  • Yet, war is still declared a couple months later for a different reason

  • On February 19, 1846, the ceremony to transfer authority to the U.S. occurs.

How Texas was Annexed

"We, the people of Texas, in order to form a government, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence and general welfare, and to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution." - Constitution of the Republic of Texas

Negotiation and Annexation

"The people of Texas having, at the time of adopting their constitution, expressed by an almost unanimous vote, their desire to be incorporated into the Union of the United States, and being still desirous of the same with equal unanimity, in order to provide more effectually for their security and prosperity" - Treaty of Annexation
