Results of Annexation

 

  • The Mexican-American War starts on May 13, 1845 because of border disputes.

  • The war ended on February 2, 1848 with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

  • Current day California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming are sold for $15 million in what is known as the Mexican Cession.

  • The treaty also sets borders between the U.S. and Mexico so that there is no further dispute.

From Texas to the Pacific

 

  • The Annexation of Texas helped complete the dream to reach the Pacific and fulfill the belief of Manifest Destiny.

  • The annexation of Texas lead to the Gadsden Purchase which ultimately led to Americans having access to the Pacific.

  • Manifest Destiny, the belief that American settlers were destined to expand throughout the continent, was fulfilled.

  • The United States spread its technology, social ideas, political ideas, and religion throughout the country.

 

Relationship to Other Purchases
 
  • Other purchases along with Texas Annexation created more territory for Americans to settle in. 

  • These purchases also led to the formation of more states.

  • The Mexican Cession occured mainly because of the war which had been caused by the annexation of Texas and dispute over borders.

  • The Texas Annexation was the fourth major purchase/ annexation of the seven.
